Including alternative text on images is the fastest way for faculty to improve their course’s Ally score. Go beyond the basics and unlock the magic of alt text! Learn how to craft descriptive, engaging, and truly meaningful alt text that transforms images into accessible gateways for all learners. We’ll explore best practices and common pitfalls. From images used in PPT to complex images in online courses, you’ll leave with the power to bring your visuals to life for everyone.

This session will focus on the alternative text necessary for a variety of complex images used in instruction, including:

  • Data plots used in statistics courses
  • Accessible transcripts for multi panel comics used in graphic novels
  • Diagrams and illustrations used to teach anatomy
  • Describing structures, renderings, and schematics used in architecture and engineering
  • Infographics created in tools like Canva

Extra instruction will also be provided on:

  • The use of accessible color in design when creating images
  • How and when to decrease the cognitive load of images for learners
  • Pairing alternative text with extended instructional narratives

Attendance of a previous accessibility training is not required. We suggest bringing your own laptop to work.
