ART AND MATH SEMINAR: The Mathematics of Juggling: about Balls and Braids

Thursday, December 1, 2022 12pm to 1pm

Laurent Di Menza

Title: The Mathematics of Juggling: about Balls and Braids

Abstract:In this talk, I will give a connection between juggling patterns and a specific language referred as siteswap, consisting
in finite sequences of numbers, in the case of asynchronous juggling. This way of coding enables to understand the structure of the corresponding patterns. I will give some basic examples of siteswaps as well as classical juggling tricks. No mathematical or juggling experience is required for attending this presentation :-)

About the Speaker: Laurent Di Menza is full professor at the Laboratoire de Mathématiques de Reims (LMR) in Champagne-Ardenne University. He defended a PhD dissertation in Bordeaux University in 1995 and obtained a Maître de Conférences position in Paris-Saclay University until 2008. He works in the field of numerical simulations of models arising in astrophysics, ecology and dispersive media.

A juggling presentation at the Sorbonne University.

This is online zoom  seminar.  To attend the talks  please complete the 2022-2023 academic year registration form.
