On October 14 at 3pm there will be a Live Webinar providing valuable information on the 2026 cycle for the Boren Awards. 

What is a Boren Award for International Study? 

Boren Awards are scholarships and fellowships for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students committed to long-term overseas study and to public service. Boren awardees receive funding to study the languages most critical to our nation's security in the regions below:

  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Central and Eastern Europe
  • Eurasia
  • Latin America
  • Middle East

As a condition of their award, Boren Scholars and Fellows agree to utilize their skills within the federal government by seeking and securing national security employment for at least one year, strengthening the federal workforce and enhancing U.S. capabilities, deterrence, and readiness.

BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS

Fund study abroad by U.S. undergraduate students in world regions critical to U.S. interests.
Maximum awards are determined by duration abroad:

  • $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
  • $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
  • $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

BOREN FELLOWSHIPS

Fund research and language study proposals by U.S. graduate students in world regions critical to U.S. interests.
