KAWSE Inclusive Leadership Series: Mercedes Meyer - Kansas State University Events

Topic: Fostering Mentorship in Women and the Search for Equality in Innovation

Speaker: Dr. Mercedes Meyer, Partner, Intellectual Property Group of Faegre Drinker Biddle & Raeth, LLP's Washington, DC office

Session Description: Over 53% of PhDs are awarded to women. Yet, only 12% of recognized innovators in the United States are women. Why?  Women increasingly are dominating the pool of doctoral graduates, and yet whether in academia or industry, the numbers of women relative to patent publications have not increased at the same rate, with the statistics becoming more skewed if one accounts for women who are serial inventors.  Innovation advances need the ideas of women as much as women today need to understand the role of patent protection for advancing innovation.  The presentation explores how the statistics were uncovered and solutions being advanced by organizations such as the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO).
