The well-documented orphan trains brought a wave of humanity to the Midwest in the late 1800s. A lesser-known wave arrived in secrecy. In the early to mid-1900s, Kansas City was known as the "Adoption Hub of America." More than 100,000 pregnant, unwed young women arrived to give birth in one of several maternity facilities.
