For nine long years, the Trojan War has been raging. The Greeks, desperate for victory and longing to return home, are informed by an oracle that defeating Troy is possible only through the return of Philoctetes, a skilled warrior, and his magical bow and arrow from exile. Years prior, Philoctetes was abandoned by the Greek army on the remote island of Lemnos after being bitten by a snake, which left him afflicted with a mysterious illness during the journey to Troy. Now, the task of persuading Philoctetes to join the battle against the Trojans falls to Odysseus and the young officer Neoptolemus. Their plan involves traveling back to Lemnos and deceiving Philoctetes into joining them. However, when Neoptolemus confronts Philoctetes, he realizes that the mission is much more challenging than expected. Sophocles' play delves into themes of deception, loyalty, and betrayal, offering a timeless narrative. Brian Doerries' translation vividly brings this story to life, making it accessible to modern audiences.
