DESCRIPTION:Energy production requires water\, and water treatment and dist
 ribution require energy . In recent years\, the United States has seen col
 lisions at this energy-water nexus\, where insufficient resources in one s
 ector impact the reliability of the other. Further\, climate change and po
 pulation growth are beginning to impact the supply and demand balance for 
 both energy and water resources \, creating additional difficulties. As th
 e challenges of rising temperatures\, declining water availability\, droug
 ht\, growing energy demands\, and escalating water needs shift the connect
 ions at energy and water\, it becomes clear that solutions to each problem
  must consider cascading effects on the others.\n\nThis seminar\, led by D
 r. Kristen Averyt of the American Meteorological Society and president of 
 the Desert Research Institute\, will outline the core concepts of the ener
 gy-water nexus\, how this issue has manifest in different parts of the Uni
 ted States\, and recent research evaluating US electricity system optimiza
 tion under different climate conditions.\n\nA student poster session will 
 occur from 5-6 p.m. Students interested in presenting a poster can contact
