Title: Leadership in Statistics: Increasing our Value and Visibility.
Abstract: The most prevalent feedback I have received about statisticians throughout my 22 year career in drug development is what might be termed a “pull for more.” Scientists who work with statisticians in multidisciplinary drug development teams are deeply thirsty for the ideas and input from the statistician on the team. Paradoxically, in spite of this wonderful opportunity, our visibility is moving in the wrong direction. Statistical leadership is a key capability that can unlock the value of our profession though the development of better soft skills and greater influence. We also need to take care to avoid being perceived as unduly negative, as evidenced by suggestions in the current statistical literature that “the world of research has gone berserk.” Examples will be provided from drug development, including a discussion of opportunities in the era of Big Data and the impact of the growing popularity of data scientists. A vibrant future for statistics will require greater strategic partnership through leadership.
