Date: Wednesday, February 7th – Friday, March 1st, 2024
Location: Chang Gallery, APDesign Seaton Hall, Kansas State University
In an exploration of the complex interplay between identity, perception, and shared experience, the College of Architecture, Planning & Design at Kansas State University is proud to present "Ten," an exhibition by Gabby Coleman, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture. Running from February 7th to March 1st, 2024, "Ten" invites viewers to engage with a thought-provoking collection of ten portraits from Coleman's acclaimed "more than a color" art series.
Originally conceived during Coleman's ADS7 and ADS8 studios in collaboration with Professor Bob Condia and completed in the summer of 2019, the "more than a color" series was born from a design prompt seeking a public art installation for the K-State campus. Responding to this challenge, Coleman's paintings serve as poignant reflections on the social dynamics of skin color, encapsulating personal testimonies within vibrant yellow, sign-like panels.
"Ten" acts as a homecoming for a curated selection of ten portraits, offering viewers a unique opportunity to delve into the intricate narratives of identity and connection. Each painting serves as a catalyst for dialogue, fostering chance encounters between individuals and public art. By highlighting the invisible threads of shared experience that unite us, "Ten" underscores our collective "sameness" while celebrating the richness of our individual "difference."
As viewers engage with each panel, they are invited to unravel the complex stories concealed within. Behind every face lies a unique journey, challenging preconceptions and inviting deeper introspection. Through this exploration of identity and perception, Coleman prompts us to reconsider our understanding of self and other, inviting us to embrace the diversity that defines us.
The inclusion of Coleman's companion works within the "Ten" exhibition reinforces the ongoing dialogue surrounding identity and representation. By bringing together the temporary showcase in the Chang Gallery, with the permanent display at the Morris Family Multicultural Student Center, "Ten" highlights the enduring impact of Coleman's artistry and its resonance within the broader community.
Join us in the Chang Gallery as we embark on a journey of discovery with "Ten," an exhibition that transcends boundaries and invites us to celebrate the beauty of our shared humanity.
