Topology Seminar: Embedding Stein manifolds into closed symplectic manifolds (Part One)
Speaker: Malcolm Gabbard
This talk will provide the background necessary to understand the following theorem and its proof: Any Stein manifold embedds into a closed symplectic manifold.
In the first of two talks, we will review Lefchetz fibrations, open book decompositions, and positive allowable Lefschetz fibrations (PALFs). The proof of this theorem provides an algorithmic way to construct a PALF on a Stein manifold and an algorithmic way "close-up" a given PALF into a symplectic manifold.
